Software Development Engineer – Big Data

We’re looking for an engineer to extend our Big data platform. Our Big Data platform processes massive data sets to develop business intelligence and analytics that are critical for the efficiency and profitability of our advertising business. You will be a self-starter with strong design and coding skills who loves shipping great product. You will thrive on implementing creative approaches and dealing with the intricate complexity of petabyte scale advertising (over 10B new events per day), our rich retail data, and the needs of our diverse advertiser base. You will challenge yourself and others to constantly come up with better solutions that disrupt the direction of the entire industry.

What will you help us create?
You will design and deliver innovative software solutions to enable fast and secure ML development. You are ready to learn, apply and enable internal scientists and developers to use new technologies effectively. You are curious about new ML tools, have a keen eye on data security and have strong written and verbal communication skills. Members of this team tend to have a high degree of fluency in one or more programming languages and tools and work with an unwavering focus on simplicity and performance.
You will provide technical leadership and also contribute to the definition, development, integration, testing, documentation, and support of software applications across multiple platforms. Successful candidates must be motivated to work in a data driven environment, have a desire to drive process improvement, and be capable of translating high-level, ambiguous business goals to working software solutions.



A day in the life

· Work with data providers to ingest data into the Datalake.
· Work with scientist to understand their data exploration needs.
· Codify ETL jobs to automate like anonymization, snapshot and aggregated datasets generation using CDK.
· Run demos to show scientists how the data can be explored and used for their needs.
· Codify operational monitoring mechanisms like alarms and dashboards.
· Monitor operations and make improvements based issues discovered.



The ideal candidate:

· Has a strong foundation in software development, design patterns, and cloud computing.
· Has some experience working with Big-data, distributed systems, and web applications and understands how they are deployed.
· Has experience with database design (SQL/NoSQL)
· Promotes robust and maintainable code, clear documentation, and can deliver high quality work on tight schedules.
· Enjoys working side by side with partners, colleagues and teams on challenging problems.

· Is driven to learn and adapt, explore new technologies and push the boundaries of what's possible.

This position prefers that the candidate selected be a U.S. citizen and be willing to maintain a TS security clearance

This position requires up to 10% travel.

Basic Qualifications


· Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field
· 3+ years experience building successful production software systems
· 3+ years of experience with OO design/development skills and a track record for driving projects from concept to prototype and finally implementation
· 3+ years of experience in a variety of programming languages (Java, Scala, Python, TypeScript)
· Experience in open-source technologies (Linux, SQL, Docker) and Amazon Web Services (Glue, Athena, EMR, Redshift, S3, SQS, EC2)

Preferred Qualifications

· Experience developing cloud software services and an understanding of design for scalability, performance and reliability
· Experience in Amazon Web Services (Glue, Athena, EMR, Redshift, S3, SQS, EC2)
· Development experience defining, developing and maintaining web service API's
· Experience with technical communications with both technical and non-technical peers
· Experience supporting machine learning applications and data scientists
· The ability to define system architecture and explore the feasibility of various designs
· Some experience with Big Data technologies, e.g., Hadoop, Spark

· Demonstrated ability to mentor other software developers to maintain architectural vision and software quality

For employees based in Colorado, this position starts at $125,000 per year. A sign-on bonus and restricted stock units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the position offered
