About the role

This is a unique, exciting opportunity to help build technology from the ground up. We are looking for engineers who also have an interest in working closely with product engineers, Machine learning and data scientists to join Orum’s technology team. Data is a primary driver of our business value. While not directly building models, our systems will support the analysis, evaluation and delivery of trained models.

Exceptional data systems is the backbone of Orum’s first products brought to market. The ideal candidate is an experienced pipeline builder and data wrangler who enjoys optimizing data systems and building them from inception to completion. They must be self-directed and comfortable supporting the data needs of multiple teams, systems and products. Data architecture and tooling will be supporting many aspects of our business including operations and strategy functions.

As part of a small but growing engineering team, you will also help create the engineering culture and values at Orum. We strive to have a strong, deliberate culture defined around continuous learning, autonomy and ownership, and acknowledgement of failure. You don’t need to match our practices and culture, as you’ll help to define it. We pride ourselves on diversity and creating an inclusive workplace that provides equal opportunities to all persons.

In this role, you’ll:

  • Create, maintain and optimize our batch and streaming data pipeline architectures.
  • Design, create, manage and build tooling around our data lake to service multiple analytical modeling, and application workloads.
  • Work closely with Data Scientists and Machine Learning Engineers to provide tooling and design solutions to support our analytics and modeling needs.
  • Partner with Software Engineers to provide and maintain data products that serve application workloads.
  • Strategize with teammates in other functions to identify the appropriate work streams.
  • Lead project based work within the team, provide guidance to more junior teammates, and keep all relevant stakeholders informed of progress.
  • Collaborate with teammates and seek appropriate guidance from leadership to enable end to end ownership of project based work
  • Prioritize work against organizational objectives and key results.
  • Anticipate problems and blockers proactively; turn those insights into actionable recommendations and solutions.
  • Provide and solicit regular feedback from peers, stakeholders, and leaders in the pursuit of transparent, effective, and efficient communication.
  • Evangelize best practices in data engineering, across the organization.

You should apply if:

  • You have experience building and optimizing data pipelines, architectures and datasets.
  • You have working knowledge of message queuing, stream processing patterns and technologies like AWS Lambda and SQS/SNS
  • You have a deep understanding of the enterprise data warehouse solutions and platforms (RDBMS, Cloud, big data).
  • You have experience supporting and working with cross-functional teams in a dynamic environment.
  • You have experience with data pipeline and workflow orchestration tools like Airflow or Luigi.
  • You have experience with functional programming and scripting languages such as Scala and Python
  • You have experience with advanced SQL, sql queries troubleshooting and optimization.
  • You have familiarity with batch and stream-processing systems and big data tools such as AWS Glue, Athena, Spark, Kinesis, Kafka, and Hadoop/EMR.
  • 5+ years of Scala, Python or Java development experience.
  • 5+ years of SQL experience.
  • 3+ years of experience with Databricks and a cloud provider, preferably AWS.
